The NSF has awarded a grant to partially support the costs of traveling to and attending the QIP 2016 conference in Banff for students and postdocs with substantial need. Grants will range up to approximately US$1000, although the exact amount awarded may vary depending on the number and needs of successful applicants.
To apply for funding, applicants should send an email to by November 11th, 2015 including the following information in the body of the email:
- A short two-sentence justification for the need of funding.
- A very brief resume including current institution, level of education and any prior publications in the field.
- A statement indicating gender and membership in an under-represented minority.
- A statement from the advisor (in the case of student applicants) confirming the student's eligibility and recommending that the student attend QIP. (This can be sent directly by the advisor.)
Preference will be given to applicants satisfying the following criteria:
- Student authors and co-authors of accepted papers who do not have other support.
- Members of under-represented groups with research interests in areas covered by QIP
whose attendance would broaden participation at the conference.
- Student applicants whose statements and supporting information make particularly
cogent and concise statements about how they will benefit from attending the conference.
- Other participants from institutions not traditionally represented at the conference.
- Postdoctoral authors of accepted papers.
- First-time applicants and students who have not received travel stipends to QIP in the
recent past.
Applicants to receive the award will be selected by a committee comprising Barry Sanders (QIP local chair), Krysta Svore (MSR research) and Thomas Vidick (Caltech).
Important notes to applicants:
- Only flights on US carriers can be reimbursed.
- Reimbursement for accommodation will be based on the expectation of shared accommodation.
