Book:

This course uses the book Database System Concepts (5th ed.) by Silberschatz, Korth, and Sudarshan. Copies are available in the Caltech Bookstore. Also, there is a copy on reserve in the Sherman Fairchild Engineering Library.

Of course, the bookstore price is pretty high. Purchasing a new or used copy through amazon.com or bookpool.com can save you some money, although you need to make sure you get it reasonably quickly. (The bookpool.com site is particularly slow; that's why their prices are so cheap.)

My biggest complaint with this book is that, due to its recent publication, it still has a number of typographical errors. So, refer to the online errata for what you are currently reading! If you plan on keeping the book after this class (which I strongly recommend), you may want to mark the corrections into the text. This is what I do.

There is a website for the book: http://www.db-book.com. The website has lecture slides for each chapter if you want a second set of slides to review each week. The appendixes for the book are also available on that website.
